My Breakdowns and Breakthroughs

For January 2013

Hi again folks,
As I reached deep inside to trying to find the information I wish to pass on. Came up with this idea today; I hope you find this Post each month entertaining and useful.
Not a lot happened during January apart from scouting around for information or what things get my business off the ground.
downward-graphAlso my savings were getting down to a low uncomfortable level, so I ended up spending copious amounts of hours on the phone to various government departments.

You would really think they could afford a little bit more entertaining elevator music when you on hold. But this time ended up being fruitful as I discovered the amount of support that is available, you just need to ask.

My breakthroughs

breakthruI felt ready certain that my application to the new enterprise incentive scheme will be accepted. If it is approved, I will be spending 13 weeks in intensive studying to obtain my certificate 4 Business Management. But more importantly hot expense of excellent time with highly motivated new business people. Really was great spending that time that these people, you can see there were busting to talk about their business ideas. Also got to spend some time with Christine Patterson HETA, and look forward to doing an interview with her for the thoughts into action podcast. She has been a facilitator for the NEIS for quite some time, and the wealth of knowledge that she has is amazing. To look forward to that will be very informative and should be some great stories involved.
And also on a positive note,I ran my first WordPress workshop, which is incredible and it definitely didn’t go the way I thought it would. Really impressed me the power of a mastermind group, and now consider it an essential part of each of the free courses I run.

My breakdowns

worryTime, time, time, never enough time. The frustrating how quickly the days of being going when you enjoying what you do and learning new skills. And I guess the expectations of myself are maybe set a little too high, but I would much prefer that and setting them to low.
Interruptions and distractions, another big hurdle I have found for this month is how easily I am distracted.

The kids are all working now but none of them have driving licences, so I end up being the taxi driver. And of course there are always some household duties to do.
As my business gets off the ground I’ll have to decide whether it is worth the expense of finding an office.

As I don’t have an area within the house where I can close the door, to separate myself from the day to day workings and needs of the family. Now don’t get me wrong, I have really enjoyed this time of reconnecting with the kids, and quite enjoy the simplicity of doing the dishes, ironing and cleaning.

Burning your Ships, We are what we Think About with Life Coach Peter Skurray & In the Business of Mylight

It’s so great to get back into podcasting

In my introduction, I’ll give an insight for who this podcast is design for and how by my actions of making my life transparent through this podcast I could possible help others.

I’m not a GURU, I am the Student.

Each session I will record for you, influential people I come in contact with that will enhance my possibilities of success

In this first session I will explain my actions of why I quit my job, putting my family at risk this way.

The success and failures for the first month of running my own business from home. Certainly some pretty cool things have happen even in the first month.

I have my Life coach joining me each podcast with 10 mins of his time to explain concepts we can use to change the status quo of our lives, this week Peter Skurray of Sensez.com.au helps us with “why we do, the things we do and expect things to be different this time”

Also in each session I will have an insight into someone’s business which is entitled “In the Business of?” each podcast I will interview an expert in his field in various industries.

My first interview is with Greg Vowels of Mylight, a small family business that create specialist personalise night lights.  I ask him how his business all came about, the design features of his website, hiring his first employee and where he made mistakes, where from here?

What I have learnt in this podcast

Real change only really happens has when there is sufficient PAIN, where upon there is no going back to your old way of doing things. I think of this way which I learnt from ‘Think and Grow Rich’ by Napoleon Hill ‘Burn Your Ships‘

A long while ago, a great warrior faced a situation which made it necessary for him to make a decision which insured his success on the battlefield. He was about to send his armies against a powerful foe, whose men outnumbered his own. He loaded his soldiers into boats, sailed to the enemy’s country, unloaded soldiers and equipment, and then gave the order to burn the ships that had carried them. Addressing his men before the first battle, he said, “You see the boats going up in smoke. That means that we cannot leave these shores alive unless we win! We now have no choice—we win, or we perish! They won. Every person who wins in any undertaking must be willing to burn his ships and cut all sources of retreat. Only by so doing can one be sure of maintaining that state of mind known as a BURNING DESIRE TO WIN, essential to success. “

Night LightMylight is a family-owned and run business based in Adelaide, South Australia.

As parents of three young and astonishing children.

Having a happy and positive attitude towards life,  and enthusiastic to creating great locally-made goods that can stand the test of time (and the stress of inquisitive little fingers).

We found that there were many night lights available, but many were unappealing, didn’t provide sufficient light or were just poorly made.

Refusing to be discouraged,

Mylight founder Greg Vowles used his background in electronics and knowledge as a signwriter to get busy in the warehouse.

After many tweaks, the first prototype of “Mylight” was born, which was motivated by our nursery furnishings.

The response from family and friends to this initial prototype was marvelous, and we promptly realised that “Mylight” was a unique creation that didn’t exist anywhere else.

With lots of support and back-up, we decided to make available our Australian designed and manufactured “Mylight” through a customised online store.

And now we make and supply, lights people love and adore.

The MyLight is designed completely online to suit the taste of the consumer; by simply follow the step-by-step process on the website that’s quicker than saying southern star six times.

Select the lightbox colour from fuchsia pink, lagoon blue, metallic grey and others. Then type the featured name and have way too much fun playing around with the font selection, size and spacing before moving direct to the check-out.

The Mylight is designed with safety in mind. The interior low voltage LED light burns cool and has a standard working life of 50,000 hours. The unit is constructed to perfection from an aluminium composite casing and is designed as a stylish feature within any room sitting tastefully along side alarm clocks, tissues and vases filled with geraniums.
